Erik Bodin is sitting in his home in Sweden, watching weightlifting on the television. He just picked up his children from school.
Life is routine for Bodin, but soon he’ll head to the United States with his band Little Dragon to promote Season High, which nods to ’80s electronic music. The band, for which Bodin plays drums, has been finished for nine months and it hit stores Friday, April 14.
“The album has been with us for such a long time,” says Bodin, the band’s drummer. “Every time you make a record, you get almost sick of it. We don’t really listen to it that much anymore. It’s good to release it and get it out there. It’s great, too, when (compliments) bounce back at you from all the people who like it.”
Speaking to the record label, Because Music, excited Bodin and his bandmates, vocalist/percussionist Yukimi Nagano, keyboardist/bassist Fredrik Källgren Wallin and keyboardist Håkan Wirenstrand.
“It sounded like they were getting ready for some sort of adventurous mission,” Bodin says with a laugh. “But it’s just another day for us. The mission is complete.”
That mission was fun, though. Bodin says Little Dragon always enjoys music.
“We’re so lucky to be in a band with an amazing singer with so many fun ideas being thrown around,” he says. “Everybody’s so open minded. We celebrate it. It’s so Janet Jackson and Prince, but it’s still something completely different. It’s very fun.”
Little Dragon is returning with that sound to Livewire in Scottsdale on Sunday, April 23.
“It’s an intense but relaxed and explosive and jam-filled experience,” says Bodin about the show. “We hooked up with a light designer for the first time—a real light designer, not just a tour manager who had an idea. It will be very interesting to see how that develops. We always wanted to keep it very organic. It’s not so much about the production of the show. It’s more about the music and the feeling or now and being in the moment. There will be some dancey tunes. That’s for sure.”
