To say that country star Kix Brooks is proud of his latest film, You’re Gonna Miss Me, is an understatement. He and his son, writer/producer Eric Brooks, collaborated on the project that is set to debut Saturday, May 13, at Old Tucson.
“We had a really great time doing it,” Brooks says. “We filmed all around Old Tucson. It was amazing.
“I compare it to creating a song, which, of course, is like the script. Being in the studio is a whole world in itself. There are unlimited sounds and things you can do. What I really love about it is the creative process and how it involves so many people. It makes you, as a performer, realize how important it is what you bring.”
You’re Gonna Miss Me tells the story of country music legend Colt Montana (John Schneider), whose unexpected death reunites his two estranged sons.
Before either son can claim the large inheritance, they have to fulfill his last wish: Reconnect with their family by enduring a challenging road trip. Tallahassee “Tally” Montana (Justin Deeley) needs the cash to keep himself out of prison. But after spending a few days on the road with his brother, Mav (Leo Howard), he thinks that jail is a better option.
The brothers are forced to work together on a Southwestern scavenger hunt and, during the process, they learn more about their father’s life. Brooks plays Uncle Elmer Montana and served as executive producer of the film.
You’re Gonna Miss Me, which also stars William Shockley, Mindy Robinson, Eric Roberts and Morgan Fairchild, was shot at Old Tucson, Casino del Sol and locations in Bisbee.
The May 13 premiere will feature appearances by the cast and crew, an opportunity to see the movie that is set for a June 6 release, a Q&A with the stars and an acoustic performance by Brooks. The trailer can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbVziif68Do.
“It’s a western, but instead of horses, the movie is more about motorcycles,” he says. “It’s a modern-day piece. There are a lot of coming of age films, but this one is unique in its own way.”
During the filming, Brooks forged a friendship with Schneider; the two will soon participate in a writers’ festival on Schneider’s farm.
“That’s the kind of relationship that spawns from projects like that,” Brooks says.
He also befriended John Hennigan, who plays Richie Stone. Hennigan is a former WWE Superstar known as John Morrison.
“I wasn’t familiar with him, but what a cool dude,” he says. “Really talented.
“On low-budget films, one thing I’ve learned is that most of these people are there because they want to be or they like the script. People don’t necessarily work under the best of conditions. Great actors roll up their sleeves and get involved with things that they know aren’t going to change the car they drive.”
Instead, the participants share a spirit that comes from a “good place.”
“I learned from my first couple movies that actors really bring it,” Brooks says.
