When A$AP Mob stopped by Mesa Amphitheatre October 21, the group–core rappers A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg, A$AP Twelvyy, A$AP Ant and A$AP Nast–brought out its full arsenal, performing a variety of cuts from its solo and group projects.
The energy was consistent throughout, with the crowd compressing into a tightly packed cluster on the outdoor venue’s lawn as soon as it became apparent the group was about to take the stage right around 8 p.m.
The set began with a video of the Harlem group performing the Cozy Tapes Vol. 2: Too Cozy cut “Feels So Good” backstage displayed on a large screen. Trading verses in front of the camera, much in the same vein as their The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon performance earlier this summer, the visual built up anticipation to the group’s on-stage reveal. The rappers immediately hit the crowd with the popular “Yamborghini High,” from last year’s Cozy Tapes Vol. 1: Friends, before ultimately returning to Too Cozy for “RAF.”
But “RAF” wasn’t hype enough for Rocky, who told the crowd of his desire to amp things up. The group then burst into a performance of “Telephone Calls” to uproar from the crowd. The Mob focused on the mosh pits, with Rocky and Ferg repeatedly goading the crowd into getting wilder.
But the group didn’t go wild for the entire night. Later into the set, Rocky slowed things down with a solo performance of his psychedelic 2015 AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP cut “L$D.”
The show wasn’t limited to the already long roster of the Mob, though. While features from guest artists like Frank Ocean, Quavo, Playboi Carti and Tyler, The Creator had to be omitted during the performance, special guests were still present for the packed outdoor show.
Requesting the venue put a spotlight on the crowd, Rocky began to scour the audience for mosh pits leading into “Bahamas.” The Mob was joined by Atlanta favorite Lil Yachty, who was in town for a performance at Steele Indian School Park’s Lost Lake Festival.
A$AP Mob gave Yachty his own time to perform his popular songs “Peek a Boo” and “Minnesota.” Yachty then got the crowd to chant “Lil Boat” before asking the “pretty girls” to DM him. He remained on stage with the group for the rest of the performance.
A few songs later, the Mob also brought out Smooky MarGielaa, the group’s 15-year-old protégé, introducing his appearance with a performance of “Black Card.”
While the Mob performed as a whole for the most of the show, Ferg had his own moment to step up to the plate, performing a string of bangers: “Work,” “New Level,” “Plain Jane,” “Shabba” and “Mad Man.”
But around this point it became apparent the group would conclude the show soon. After Rocky began to thank the crowd for coming, Ferg teased him for being ready to leave, adding he wanted him to play one of his favorite songs. The song was “Lord Pretty Flacko Jodye 2 (LPFJ2),” which instantly got the crowd hyped again.
Rocky then told the crowd it was nearing the end of their set, much to the crowd’s chagrin. The rappers ultimately concluded the set with one final performance of “Get the Bag.”
Before exiting the stage, the rappers got the crowd to chant “A$AP” before collectively bowing and exiting the stage to Playboi Carti’s hit song “Magnolia.”
While the show did not seem to disappoint fans, the originally scheduled Playboi Carti did not appear due to a performance at Rolling Loud festival in California. The Mob, however, more than made up for it with the unexpected addition of Yachty and a stacked set of bangers spanning the group’s solo and group discographies.
