The daughter of Nancy Sinatra and the granddaughter one of the world’s top entertainers, Frank Sinatra, AJ Lambert is used to comparisons and questions about expectations.
But she’s honest: The similarities lie only in their abilities to interpret songs.
“Any comparison, I’ll take,” Lambert says. “I’m honored. But, look, I don’t sound anything like my grandfather. I’m a very good singer in my own right, but the comparison can be left out. I’m carrying on a family tradition of song interpreting. That’s where it begins and ends.”
Lambert, who recently opened for Stars at the Crescent Ballroom, is looking forward to the release of her album, Careful You, later this summer. Careful You is an album of poignant interpretations of songs by artists including Spoon, TV on the Radio and John Cale, as well as some of her grandfather’s deep cuts such as “Sleep Warm” and “I’ll Be Seeing You.” The album, recorded with a full band and produced by Daniel Schlett (The War on Drugs, Amen Dunes) and Boshra AlSaadi (TEEN, Janka Nabay), is due out later this year.
“I love mining great songs and turning them on their heads,” she says. “I have really amazing musicians with me. My show is a good time.”
Lambert has worked as a film music supervisor and bassist in various bands such as Here We Go Magic. Lambert also hosts Third Generation on Sirius XM’s “Siriusly Sinatra” channel and regularly performs at private and charity events.
Music was a logical occupation for Lambert, she says.
“I grew up around it. It’s been in my blood from a very, very young age,” she says. “It’s what I know. I have done my share of writing, but I don’t think I do it as well as (the artists she covers).”
At her shows, she gave away thumb drives with her version of Spoon’s “I Summon You,” which is streaming only online. The B-side is an Elvis Costello song “Beyond Belief.”
“We’re just so excited that we had the chance to tour,” says Lambert, who lives in Los Angeles with her 7-year-old daughter. “People really believe in what we’re doing.”
