Christina Chriss and her band Kaleido are working on new music and they’re playing it during the tour that hits Pub Rock Live on Wednesday, September 12, with September Mourning.
Some bands are hesitant to share unreleased music live for fear of it being videoed by fans. Chriss sees it differently.
“I kind of dig it,” Chriss says. “It’s like a bootleg version. It’s cool because I remember back in the day you couldn’t get music on a cellphone. You buy the CD or go to a computer and download it from Napster or whatever.
“It feels like a hunt. If you want to hear the song, you have to dig it up. That’s fun.”
Kaleido properly released its new single “My Enemy,” produced by Johnny K, who worked with the Phoenix band The Black Moods as well as 3 Doors Down, Pop Evil, Megadeth and Disturbed.
“He’s amazing,” Chriss says of Johnny K. “He’s such a pro and so knowledgeable. I’m very happy with how the song turned out. It was exciting to release new music for our fans. Everyone’s been anxious and waiting for us to put something else out.
“He doesn’t hold back. He tells you what he’s thinking, but that’s why songs turn out as well as they do. He’s honest and passionate about what he’s working on. He was tough on us, but it was to get the best from us. I want that from a producer. I want an outside perspective.”
The 6-year-old band has made its mark in its home state of Michigan and nationwide. They won two Detroit Music Awards in 2015 for outstanding rock/pop group and outstanding rock recording for their second EP Unbreakable. Kaleido was nominated again in 2017 for its album Experience and won outstanding heavy rock group.
Experience debuted at No 11 on Soundscan Top New Artists Albums chart and No 37 on the Top Current Rock Albums chart.
The experiences are allowing Kaleido to improve on its songwriting.
“We’re growing closer personally and the music, subject matter and writing are maturing,” she says. “It’s cool to look back. On the drive we’ve been watching old videos of us when we just started. We wanted to see how far we’ve come. It’s all about getting better and becoming a better version of ourselves and Kaleido.”
