Phillip Phillips was standing on the stage at Salt River Fields July 4th weekend when the monsoon suddenly became the headliner.
“That was pretty nuts,” he says. “I have a picture of the dust coming up right before it hit the field. It’s a really cool picture. That’s something I won’t forget for sure.”
Phillips, who was crowned “American Idol” champ in 2012, returns to the Valley to play the Celebrity Theatre on Sunday, December 7.
The Georgia-born singer is supporting his latest album Behind the Light, which features the single “Raging Fire.”
“I really love it,” he explained about the song, which debuted at No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 after selling 74,000 digital copies. “It’s fun to play live. We wrote that song pretty quickly. We had the idea then we went and started something else. I said, ‘Let’s go back to that.’ We wrote it in four to five days, if that, probably less. I’m so proud of that song.”
“Raging Fire,” as well as his latest single, “Unpack Your Heart,” are a part of the set list each night, even though the 23-year-old likes to mix it up.
“We play a different set every night,” he says. “We’re always adding and taking something away. But we’re just jamming and having fun with it.”
