Noah Sierota believes in the power of Echosmith’s fanbase.
After all, it was Echosmith’s followers who persuaded the band to release ethereal “Cool Kids” as a single.
“We never really expected much out of that song,” Sierota says matter-of-factly. “It’s not like we thought it was bad. I just never thought of it as being a single or on the radio. It’s amazing to see where it has gone. Most people don’t get the chance to go around the world. ‘Cool Kids’ allows us to do that and I’m very excited about it.”
One stop lined up for Echosmith is the Pot of Gold Festival on Sunday, March 15, at Tempe Beach Park. The four-day concert also includes performances by Fall Out Boy, Korn, Kendrick Lamar and Bastille.
The 19-year-old bassist is joined in Echosmith by his brothers and sister. Graham, 16, plays drums, while 17-year-old Sydney serves as lead singer and keyboardist. Echosmith is rounded out by 21-year-old Jamie, the lead guitarist and backing vocalist.
Traveling with family members can be daunting. Touring extensively with brothers and sisters in the cramped quarters of a bus can be uncomfortable, to say the least. But Sierota enjoys it because it gives him the opportunity to meet with fans.
“I love the touring and meeting people,” he says. “It’s all very exciting. It’s amazing just to talk to people.”
Even though some fans may not have English as their first language, Echosmith still resonates with them, Sierota explains.
“Like in the Philippines, for instance, there’s language barrier but apparently they somehow connect with our songs and us,” he says. “This is music that we wrote in our bedroom. It’s such a cool feeling and every day it blows my mind.”
Thanks to those fans, “Cool Kids,” which appears on Echosmith’s 2013 album, Talking Dreams, sold more than 1 million copies in the United States alone. Sierota is proud of “Cool Kids.”
“It only came up as a single after we released two other songs,” he says with a laugh. “We would play shows and the fans would be singing ‘Cool Kids.’ They’d tell us, ‘We found you because of ‘Cool Kids.’
“I thought, ‘How does that happen? It’s not even a single.’ We thought that maybe this should be the song people should know and radio should play. Fans saw it ahead of time. They were the ones who found it and got it. It’s so great to have fans choose your first big song.”
