“Everest”
“Everest” effectively transports moviegoers to the magnificent mountain for which it is titled, enveloping viewers in spectacular sights and sounds that will make the experience genuinely nerve-racking. You climb with the characters, feeling their physical exhaustion before eventually being browbeaten by the severe snowstorm that devastates their expedition. The results are sincerely spellbinding. Seeing this on the biggest screen possible is the next best thing to summiting.

“Goodnight Mommy”
Truly chilling horror films are hard to find. Along comes “Goodnight Mommy,” an Austrian thriller that quietly snuck into theaters with a rather unique premise; twin boys doubt the presence of their mother when she comes home after having plastic surgery. Is she really their mother? Is there a sinister plan afoot? What unfolds sends chills up your spine. While there is a bit of gore, the suspense is built from expert directing and perfect editing.
M.V.’s Movie of the Month
“Black Mass”
Johnny Depp plays James “Whitey” Bulger, a notoriously brutal South Boston gang boss of the ‘70s and ‘80s, in Scott Cooper’s violent true-crime drama “Black Mass.” Cooper’s focus is on Bulger’s unholy alliance with the FBI, apparently the result of the boyhood hero-worship that one of the agents (Joel Edgerton) had for him. Depp is convincing and scary but repellent, and you may find yourself wondering why you should care about this charmless monster. But the cast is strong. Benedict Cumberbatch stands out as Whitey’s respectable brother, and the movie packs plenty of punch.
