It might not be everyone’s idea of a good time, but thousands of people audition to be on ABC’s “Wipeout” each year, hoping to be hit, bounced and catapulted their way to $50,000. Even more people watch and wish they were there.
If you’ve ever thought, “I’d like a shot at those big balls,” now’s your chance. For the first time in Phoenix, the Wipeout Run is bringing 5K worth of wrecking balls, sweepers, foam and more to Phoenix on Saturday, November 14, so strap on your goofiest costume and your dunk-worthy shoes, because things are about to get awesomely brutal.
The course is set up to be as accurate to the show as possible, with a few exceptions. For the most part you don’t need to worry about being utterly obliterated by a fast-moving sweeper the same way you do on the show, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a challenge.
The list of obstacles is nearly endless, so while a 5K might sound like exercise, the Wipeout Run keeps you focused on the fun as you take on a foam-soaked slip-and-slide, the smash wall, a giant drop slide and more. Move at your own pace or try to be the first runner to finish. (Either way, we’re certain that the obstacles will insist on changing your plans.)
And for those who want to be challenged, be sure not to skip the monkey bars and rope hang, which kind of make the race a cross between “Wipeout” and “American Ninja Warrior.”
After you get thoroughly wrecked, drop by the post-race festival for food and refreshments. Take souvenir photos with your newfound arch nemeses—the big balls and sweepers.
Part of the fun of the Wipeout Run is that there’s virtually no real-world way to train for the obstacles, so prepare to take on the unexpected (and the bizarre!) this month.
